Stay the night on the North Shore near Two Harbors, MN in a train car. Northern Rail Traincar Suite’s 18 renovated train cars offer Northwoods, Victorian, Oriental and safari-themed rooms in actual renovated train box cars.

More than a century ago the railroad left its indelible mark on Minnesota, casting some towns as winners in the new economy it ushered in a new era of transportation. While trains may not be our main personal mode of transportation today, one North Shore train offers one of the most unique stays in the Midwest.

“We’ve tried to maintain as much of the original train car as possible, so the suites have the original ceilings, and the inner walls facing the hallway still have the original box car markings – even the graffiti if it was on the box car,” said staffer Andrea. “The large size rooms are the size of a partial or full train car.”

Rooms include king or queen beds and full bathrooms. Some rooms have sleeper sofas, tables and chairs and electric fireplaces. Guests can enjoy continental breakfast before a day on the North Shore.

The unique stay is nearby some of the North Shore’s most popular destinations, including Split Rock Light House, the Superior Hiking Trail and the iconic Betty’s Pies.

“Guests come from all over the region, year round,” said Andrea. “We offer one of the most unique and unexpected stays in the state. Who wouldn’t way to say they’ve spent the night in a box car?”

When to Go:
With electric fireplaces and spacious suites, Northern Rail is a unique stay year round. From hiking, biking and fishing to cross-country skiing or beautiful views of the fall leaves, the North Shore is a great getaway any time of year.

While You’re There:
Be sure to stop for an afternoon treat at Betty’s Pies, a North Shore favorite. While the renovated and expanded restaurant is more commercial than the historic icon – and the crowds at meal time mean you may face a long wait – Betty’s remains an excellent stop for an afternoon pie and coffee.

North Shore favorites Gooseberry Falls State Park and Split Rock Light House State Park are just a few miles north on Hwy 61.
